Review of the author, Barry
Joe McDonagh:
The author of the Panic Away program is Barry Joe
McDonagh from Ireland, who sometimes refers to himself as Joe Barry.
He states in his Panic Away forum that he used to call himself "Joe
Barry" because he was embarrassed to have other people know
that he suffered from Anxiety. Now he is not longer embarrassed,
and chooses to use his complete name, "Barry Joe McDonagh."
Joe Barry describes himself to be a previous suffer
of Panic Attacks and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. He is not a medical
or psychiatric practitioner.
Barry Joe McDonagh claims that the strategies and techniques, especially
his One-Move Technique, reviewed in his ebook, Panic Away, have
been, "responsible for helping many thousands of people worldwide
end their anxiety disorders."
McDonagh also claims to have "the largest
collection of verifiable photo and audio testimonials for any anxiety
treatment program online."
Joe Barry McDonagh maintains a postal address
in New York City, United States, and in Galway, Ireland. |
Review of Barry Joe McDonagh's
Writing and Teaching Style in the Panic Away Program:
- Casual, not at all clinical, generally correct,
loosely organized
- Describes in detail symptoms of Anxiety and Panic
- Provides limited information about causes Anxiety
- Describes that Anxiety is caused by physical, mental and emotional
exhaustion. Note: Anxiety is not caused by exhaustion, and certainly
not caused exclusively by exhaustion. The actual causes of Anxiety
and Panic are much more varied and involved.
- Barry Joe McDonagh is consistently affirming and reassuring that
Anxiety (itself) won't "hurt" you, and is correct in these
assertions. However, you certainly could experience Anxiety while
driving your automobile, for example, become distracted, and cause
an accident.
- Barry Joe McDonagh is empathic to people suffering from Anxiety,
and emphasizes that he struggled for many years with Anxiety.
- Joe Barry McDonagh's Panic Away book and videos include basic
information about how the human body, nervous system, and mind works,
a bit simplistic, but generally correct.
- Provides helpful "Case Studies" of people struggling
with different types of Anxiety in different environments.
- Emphasizes practice and persistence in learning the Panic Away
techniques and self-treating Anxiety and Panic.
Note: McDonagh is quite correct that working through
Anxiety, even with his One-Move Technique in his Panic Away Program,
will require practice, persistence, and an understanding that symptoms
of Anxiety may return in the future.
- McDonagh's Panic Away provides a brief and very general section
about herbal treatments and remedies
- Includes only a brief mention of prescription treatments and remedies.
Barry Joe is clearly not in favor of using medications to treat
Anxiety. He is correct that using medications MIGHT be helpful for
people to "cope" with Anxiety until they learn to actually
reduce their symptoms of Anxiety much more permanently. Joe Barry
is additionally correct in suggesting that using medications is
simply "medicating" the unpleasant sensations of Anxiety,
and not really "treating" the CAUSE of Anxiety.

Review of the Types of Anxiety
Addressed in the Panic Away Program:
Barry Joe McDonagh addresses "Anxiety,"
"Panic Attacks," "Generalized Anxiety," "Night
Panic," and "Agoraphobia," He mentions "Phobias,"although
does not much differentiate the differences in treating phobias
and treating "Agoraphobia." Most of what Barry Joe describes
treating his his Panic Away course is "Generalized Anxiety
Disorder," and "Agoraphobia."
Barry Joe McDonagh provides some helpful specific
circumstances and Case Studies where people might experience symptoms
of Anxiety, including: Being on a Train w/Anxiety, Driving with
Anxiety, Fear of Leaving Home, Fear of Flying, and Fear of Public
Speaking, and how they might be assisted with his Panic Away One-Move
Technique. |
Review of the Range of Techniques
Discussed in the Panic Away Program:
The primary Anxiety treatment technique that Barry
Joe McDonagh promotes and describes in his Panic Away book, audios
and videos is called, the One-Move Technique. He claims that his
One-Move Technique has assisted "thousands" of people
with their Anxiety, including himself. Joe Barry's One-Move Technique
is made up of his own interpretation and combination of "Cognitive
Behavioral," "Desensitization" and "Self-Talk"
techniques that he claims to have developed himself.
[McDonagh also promotes some information, perhaps
for our review, about his "21-7 Solution" (21 seconds
to stop a Panic Attack with a 7 minute exercise to bring your Anxiety
back to "normal." However, at the time of this writing,
he has not completed this information and it is not yet available
from his Panic Away sales web site. I suspect that at some time
in the future he will have his "21-7 Solution" ready for
people to review and use.]
Barry Joe describes, much more briefly than his
One-Move Technique, several other "preventive" and "supportive"
techniques and attitudes for treating the symptoms of Anxiety and
Panic.
Joe Barry also describes something of the relationship
between Anxiety and nutrition, including suggested foods to eat
and not eat for people who have Anxiety.
Barry Joe McDonagh describes his "completely
natural" approach to treating Anxiety, and clearly prefers
not using prescription medications. Panic Away provides only the
briefest discussion of prescription medications for treating Anxiety. |
Review of the Clinical Efficacy
of the Panic Away Program:
Barry Joe McDonagh's techniques, although not particularly
well-organized, are clinically correct and could certainly be expected
to be helpful in treating Anxiety and Panic. His Panic Away Program
describes his One-Move Technique in great detail, and certainly
enough detaili for an Anxiety suffer to understand, learn, practice,
and achieve positive results. McDonagh also describes several other
techniques and attitudes, also clinically correct, and with a good
deal less specificity than his One-Move Technique.
For Panic and Anxiety suffers who have some experience
in dealing with their Panic and Anxiety, Joe Barry's more brief
and less specific description of these techniques would probably
be adequate. However, people with no previous experience in dealing
with their Anxiety might find his Panic Away descriptions not to
be detailed and specific enough to enable them to adequately learn,
use and achieve the results.
Barry Joe briefly and correctly suggests that even
his own techniques, including his One-Move Technique and his Panic
Away Program might not result in an immediate and complete elimination
of distressing symptoms of Anxiety and Panic. He, again quite correctly,
suggests "practicing" his Panic Away techniques over and
again, which is certain to be an important part of most, if not
all, strategies and techniques for treating Anxiety and Panic.
Barry Joe's emphasis on primarily one technique,
his One-Move Technique, will no doubt be helpful for some people
because of its general simplicity, and lack of confusion with so
many other potential strategies and techniques. However, some other
people might find Barry Joe's One-Move Technique to be inadequate
for their particular needs and may prefer to review other programs.
Barry Joe's Panic Away Program also briefly describes
how to do some "practice sessions" with his techniques
to learn to deal with Anxiety. McDonagh is quite correct in his
suggestion that Anxiety sufferers should practice dealing with Panic
and Anxiety.
Barry Joe's mp3 audio about the "One-Move
Live Audio" appears to be intended to be for use by an Anxiety
sufferer when they are actually experiencing Anxiety or Panic. If
someone had this mp3 audio loaded onto their mp3 player, and had
their player very readily available, I would expect that this mp3
audio would be timely and helpful.
Barry Joe McDonagh's "Driving Anxiety"
mp3 audio file is designed to be used to reduce anxiety before and
while you drive your automobile. Panic and Anxiety sufferers using
the Panic Away mp3's should surely be very cautious about becoming
too relaxed, or otherwise too distracted, to be able to drive carefully,
competently and safely. Users of the PanicAway program might want
to review these mp3's PRIOR to using them when driving, to see for
themselves how distracted they might become. However, assuming that
the listener were not distracted by listening to this audio, it
could certainly be expected to be helpful in lowering Anxiety levels.
Barry Joe's Panic Away videos, viewable online
only (not downloadable) are animated, interesting and extremely
well done. (I found myself wishing that they WERE downloadable so
that I could store them in my computer and review them at times
when internet was not available to me.) Some of the information
on these videos comes directly from Barry Joe's Panic Away book,
and some of the information is in addition to McDonagh's book. The
information is generally correct, especially interestingly presented,
and emphasizes learning and using the One-Move Technique. Studying
and reviewing these online videos could certainly be expected to
be an effective means of learning helpful Anxiety coping and reducing
perspectives and techniques.
Barry Joe McDonagh also provides Panic Away Case
Studies providing a diverse review of people suffering from Anxiety
and Panic Attacks in a variety of different circumstances, including:
Being on a Train w/Anxiety, Driving with Anxiety, Fear of Leaving
Home, Fear of Flying, and Fear of Public Speaking. Again, Joe Barry
emphasizes using his One-Move Technique, and discusses and describes
it from several perspectives. His Case Studies provide another of
his many helpful techniques to facilitate learning new information.

Review of the Ease of Use
of the Panic Away Program:
Barry Joe McDonagh's Panic Away system is easy
enough to download. After purchasing his program, the
Panic Away Sales Web Site sends you an email with a link to
your download page. From this page, you can download the Panic Away
ebook, mp3 audio files, and access to his online videos.
Barry Joe McDonagh's One-Move Technique is clinically
correct, and easy enough to understand, practice and use. Barry
Joe offers several different teaching and learning mediums and perspectives
in his Panic Away Program, including: a book, audios, videos, case
studies, online forum, and 1-on-1 "coaching" with Joe
Barry, through his personal email address. As such, Joe Barry has
provided an especially nice variety of modalities in his Panic Away
Program to be used in learning is information and techniques.
Most people will probably find it more difficult
to maintain the discipline necessary to PRACTICE these techniques,
than to understand them. Even a brief review of the Panic Away Program
would be helpful to begin to understand Panic and Anxiety.
The key to using any or all of Barry Joe McDonagh's
Panic Away techniques and strategies, including his One-Move Technique,
is to learn, really LEARN, not just simply review, the techniques,
PRACTICE using the techniques, and actually USE the techniques.
McDonagh's Panic Away Forum requires registering
at the web site with a User Name, a "Display Name," and
a password, fairly standard registration stuff. All information
is confirmed with an email to the email address that you provide.
At the time of this writing, there were nearly
2500 different "topic discussions" that had been started.
This Panic Away Forum has clearly been up and running for a while,
with a good deal of participation, including participation directly
from Barry Joe McDonagh.
For people who like forums, this is a very active
forum with plenty of information available for review at any time.
However, with most forums, I suspect that users should be cautious
of some of the "advice" that non-expert, but no doubt
well-meaning, Panic and Anxiety suffers often readily offer.
McDonagh's Panic Away Membership Forum includes
a "Chat" section where you can chat "real time"
with other members who are logged on at the same time.. |

Review Comments about the
Panic Away Program:
Barry Joe McDonagh has a well-developed Sales
Web Site for his Panic Away Program, including many testimonials
for your review, many comments about how good his One-Move Technique
is, and an especially well-produced and entertaining animated video
about struggling with the symptoms of Anxiety. He also has available
a Panic Away "Live Chat" feature if you have immediate
questions. Barry Joe has been selling his Panic Away book very successfully
on the internet for many years.
McDonagh's "Free Mini-Series," available
from his Panic Away sales site, and provides 5 email newsletters
with "expert advice," delivered to your email by autoresponder.
These emails take you to Joe Barry's Panic Away online newsletter
/ blog, with review information about Panic and Anxiety symptoms
and treatment. He also provides many blog comments from people who
are relieved to have found his Panic Away Program and One-Move Technique.
Barry Joe's 5 free Panic Away newsletters provide
additional review information about the symptoms of Panic and Anxiety,
as well as superficial information about treating Panic and Anxiety.
I expect that to achieve much in the way of actual results, the
information in these 5 newsletters would not be adequate to actually
treat Anxiety.
I purchased Barry Joe McDonagh's Panic Away Program
for review directly from him without his knowledge that I was reviewing
and comparing his product to other Anxiety treatment products. When
I downloaded the Panic Away Program, what I got wasn't quite exactly
what he had advertised on his Panic
Away Sales Web Site. I sent McDonagh an email about this, and
he responded quickly and graciously within 2 days with an answer.
He provided me, without my asking, an additional download page from
which to download additional mp3 audio files. McDonagh offered the
extra Panic Away mp3's to me at no charge. |
