Review of Jon Mercer and
the EasyCalm Video Coaching Series:
The author of the EasyCalm Video Coaching Series
is Jon Mercer, "a former anxiety sufferer" who first began
experiencing symptoms of Panic Attacks, Agoraphobia and Social Anxiety
at the age of 13. After suffering with anxiety for nearly 25 years,
reviewing everything he could read, and wasting "thousands
on therapy and medications," Mercer says he finally "discovered
the secret to destroying anxiety and panic attacks for good."
He developed his own coping and treatment techniques, resulting
in the development of the EasyCalm Audio and Video Coaching Series
for understanding and dealing with Panic and Anxiety Disorders.
Jon Mercer is not a medical or psychiatric practitioner,
rather describing himself to be a "Personal Development Coach
and "master practitioner of Neuro-linguistic Programming,"
Mercer says he consults with and coaches "individuals and business
leaders from around the world." Jon has lived in the United
Stated, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavia, and describes himself
to have a background "in studying psychology."
In addition to the EasyCalm Video Coaching Series,
Jon Mercer also sells a variety of other "personal development"
audio and video products, either directly or indirectly, on the
internet. |
Review of Jon Mercer's Writing
and Teaching Style in the Easy Calm Video Coaching Series:
Jon Mercer's style is very casual, informal, gentle,
informative and supportive, with a generally comforting voice. Jon
is correct in describing over and again that the symptoms of Anxiety
and Panic Attacks are common and treatable.
Jon Mercer's product, EasyCalm, comes in the format
of a simple .wmv video and mp3 audio product, with him as the only
speaker. In the EasyCalm videos, it appears that Mercer set up his
video camera on a tripod, and sat in front of his camera to talk
to you about his experiences with anxiety and panic attacks, and
what he has reviewed and discovered that is helpful in treating
anxiety and panic attacks. Jon Mercer appears to be quite comfortable
sitting in front of a video camera and speaking to you in a notably
personal manner. Jon communicates information very comfortably,
conversationally and loosely organized. His discussion, reviews
and explanations about Panic and Anxiety are "woven" into
his EasyCalm video discussion. You'll want to listen carefully to
understand his complete message and meaning.
Jon Mercer helpfully provides clear and specific
suggestions for notes that the viewer might write down. EasyCalm
also provides suggested "homework" assignments (or "exercises")
after each EasyCalm video session. Given the nature of Mercer's
"homework" assignments, I would expect that users of the
EasyCalm product would clearly benefit from their review and completion
of these assignments. Jon emphasizes the need, quite correctly,
to actually DO the EasyCalm exercises, and to "practice."
Jon also talks about the need, again quite correctly, to go back
and review over and again, some of the EasyCalm information multiple
times.

Review of the Types of Anxiety
Addressed in the EasyCalm Video Coaching Series:
In his EasyCalm Program, Jon Mercer talks mostly
of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Attacks, Social Anxiety,
Agoraphobia, and uses these terms almost interchangeably.
|
Review of the Range of Techniques
Discussed in the EasyCalm Video Coaching Series:
Jon Mercer discusses and explains and reviews,
generally not especially specifically, a variety of EasyCalm Panic
and Anxiety treatment perspectives and techniques, including breathing
techniques, relaxation techniques, cognitive behavioral strategies,
distraction techniques and habit-changing strategies. |
Review of the Clinical Efficacy
of the EasyCalm Video Coaching Series:
In creating his EasyCalm audio and video series,
Jon Mercer states that he wanted to create a panic and anxiety treatment
option other than medications. His clearly-stated bias is that he
prefers to treat Panic and Anxiety without the use of prescription
medications.
Jon Mercer provides a nice, thorough review and
discussion of the the symptoms of anxiety, and especially the Panic
and Anxiety symptoms from which he suffered. His EasyCalm explanation
clearly suggests that he can empathize with Anxiety sufferers, and
serves to instruct and explain more in detail the many symptoms
that Anxiety can potentially cause.
The EasyCalm program provides a good amount of
information about the symptoms of Anxiety, and somewhat less information
about actually treating Anxiety. Mercer explains in his videos that
they are intended to be viewed, reviewed (or listened to) in the
correct order, as the later lessons "build" on earlier
lessons.
When discussing making "life changes,"
Jon Mercer helpfully provides some information about the "process"
of making life changes, rather than simply suggesting that Anxiety
sufferers "do it differently." Although, as Mercer's reviews,
discussions and explanations of Anxiety and treating Anxiety are
not particularly "in-depth," watching his videos in other
than his intended order would likely not cause difficulties for
users of the EasyCalm program.
Jon Mercer is quite correct in emphasizing that
the treatment of Panic and Anxiety will require you to learn new
information, think different thoughts, and change your behaviors.
His EasyCalm videos provide "homework" assignments and
"exercises" that an Anxiety sufferer should certainly
do, after which they could reasonably expect to experience a increasingly
greater level of control over their symptoms of anxiety.
In his EasyCalm Program, Jon Mercer does offer
some incorrect information, especially as to the cause of Anxiety.
For example, he states that Anxiety and Panic Attacks are, with
"no exceptions," caused by a person having "control
issues." He adds that Anxiety is caused by a person having
a "low tolerance to change" and a "lack of control"
in their life. This review of the causes of Panic and Anxiety is
not correct, as the causes of Anxiety are clearly more varied and
complex.
Other than this minimal amount of incorrect information,
the remainder of Jon Mercer's EasyCalm Video Series is generally
correct. Reviewing and studying the EasyCalm information, learning
the strategies and perspectives, and doing the exercises would clearly
be helpful for a person suffering with Panic and Anxiety. |
Review of the Ease of Use
of the EasyCalm Video Coaching Series:
Reviewing Jon Mercer's videos, or listening to
his audios is simple enough, at least through your computer or mp3
player. Downloading his EasyCalm information was also simple enough
and straightforward, with no passwords to remember or use, and no
audio or video files to unzip.
The EasyCalm videos are organized into 10 videos,
generally of between 13 and 27 "easily digestible" minutes
long. These videos comprise a total of about 3 1/2 hours of content.
The information is simple enough, easy to review, not particularly
in-depth, and easily learnable. Jon's suggested homework assignments
are straightforward, easily understood and beneficial.
Mercer's three additional mp3 audios, between 6
and 22 minutes long, are also simple enough to use by listening
to them from your computer or mp3 player.
For some people, I would expect that reviewing
and watching the EasyCalm videos would be an easier and more comfortable
form of learning than reading. And audio and video files have become
increasingly more convenient to use, and certainly more portable.
Although some other people might find the EasyCalm audios and videos
to be unnecessarily slower than reading information on paper or
pdf files. Paper or pdf files are sometimes more easily reviewed
or "scanned" for new or pertinent information than are
audio or video files. |
Review of the Method of Delivery
of the EasyCalm Video Coaching Series:
Digitally downloadable videos in .wmv format, and
mp3 audios. No written materials.
"Larger" (for high-speed internet connections)
and "Smaller" (for slower-speed internet connections)
video file sizes are both available for download from the EasyCalm
download page.
